How is the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe powered?
First and foremost, you're probably wondering how the Grand Cherokee 4xe is powered, so that's where we'll begin. The basic setup of a PHEV is an internal combustion engine, electric generators, and a battery pack. The Grand Cherokee 4xe uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine for the gas-powered engine. It also uses two electric motors, one mounted in front of the engine to replace the conventional alternator, and the other mounted within the transmission, where the traditional torque converter would normally be. The electric motors are powered by a rechargeable 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack located underneath the rear seat. The Grand Cherokee provides drivers with 470 lb-ft of instantaneous torque, 375 horsepower, 56 MPG gas equivalent, 25 miles of all-electric driving, and a 470-mile total driving range with a full tank and full battery.
Is the Grand Cherokee 4xe capable of off-roading?
If you're one of the drivers worried that the electric power will affect your performance on and off the road, allow us to put your mind at ease. If you're an off-roader, then you probably know that torque is a key component to maneuver rugged terrain. As we mentioned above the 470 lb-ft of torque is immediately available. This is because the conventional torque converter is replaced by an electric motor, seamlessly delivering torque to the wheels with no delay meaning you no longer need to build up engine revolutions to move the wheels over a trail obstacle, the needed power is instantly there. To make things better, 4xe stands for four-by-electric. Jeep gave it this name because all 4xe models come standard with Jeep's fabled 4x4 capability. Standard for the Limited, Overland, and Summit 4xe models is Quadra-Trac II 4x4. This full-time 4x4 system continuously monitors road conditions and reacts to even the slightest loss of traction by redistributing torque to the axle with the most traction with a two-speed transfer case. The Trailhawk comes exclusively with Quadra-Drive II with an electronic limited-slip rear differential. The limited-slip differential allows power to be distributed to a single rear wheel with the most traction to regain grip.
Can I control the Grand Cherokee 4xe's battery usage?
To put drivers in control of the 4xe system, Jeep invented the E-Selec buttons, giving drivers three selectable drive modes. The first, and default drive mode is Hybrid. As you might imagine, this uses a mixture of gas and electric power. While decelerating or coasting, the Grand Cherokee 4xe will run on electric power. When the accelerator pedal is pressed, the gas engine will supplement any additional power if necessary. Electric mode uses only electric power, providing silent, emission-free driving for up to 25 miles. Drivers can choose Electric mode as long as the battery has one percent of charge left. The battery's charge level can be monitored on the Hybrid Electric Vehicle pages both on the infotainment touchscreen and digital gauge cluster. Finally, E-Save mode disengages the battery and both electric motors, using only gas power. This saves the battery and charges it through regenerative braking.
