New 2016 Jeep Cherokee at Central Ave Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM for Yonkers, NY
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee builds something completely new onto a very familiar name and heritage. While the original Jeep Cherokee that launched in 1986 set the bar for sport-utility vehicles that could be used as family transport, inspiring a generation of competitors, times have changed, and the market has come to favor models that are far more carlike. For the most part, that's what the Cherokee is, although Jeep has managed to built a surprising amount of ruggedness and off-road ability onto a package that's designed primarily for families, road trips, and the daily grind. Top rivals for the Cherokee include some established crossovers like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. It's a clean break from the more truck-like Jeep Liberty it replaced, and its styling is less blunt and bluff.
Under the Cherokee's Hood
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee lineup is a crossover, to the definition-a vehicle with a tall seating point, built on underpinnings that were derived from those of passenger cars or intended to be shared with cars. Given that, it's shocking how much ruggedness Jeep has managed to package into this one, or depending on how you configure it, what a docile, responsive family hauler it can be. It takes on both sides with aplomb-although from a performance standpoint the available ruggedness and off-road ability is where it stands out most. With either engine, you get a ZF 9-speed automatic, with a lower first gear for quick takeoffs, a handful of mid-range gears, and a trio of tall overdrive upper gears for good highway mpg. That wide range of ratios allows strong performance, good even with the four.
Design of Jeep Cherokee
The 2016 Cherokee comes with cloth or leather upholstery and full power accessories, as well as reclining rear seats, cruise control, and telescoping tilt-wheel steering. Lower trims feature standard manual air conditioning, with higher trims like the new Altitude sporting automatic climate control to complement additional standard features such as a remote garage door opener, a rear-view camera, and heated front seats. The Limited is slated to add a heated steering wheel and remote engine start. For those seeking some serious off-road adventures, the Trailhawk is expected to boast most of the above high-end features, along with wider 17" alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, a standard off-road suspension system, a larger gauge cluster, skid plates, and tow hooks.
